Hirel is a French commune with 1,392 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Ille-et-Vilaine in the region of Brittany .

geography

Hirel is located 20 kilometers from Saint-Malo , 15 kilometers from Cancale , 10 kilometers from Dol-de-Bretagne and 35 kilometers from Mont-Saint-Michel .

history

Coin finds prove that the place existed in Roman times.
Hirel and the district of Vildé-la-Marine were built on a layer of sand. A dam, specifically dedicated to the Duchess Anne de Bretagne , protected Hirel from floods. The swampy area was drained and cultivated through the construction of a canal system. In 843, Charles the Bald allowed local residents to fish. Several mills were later built along the five kilometers of coastline. The mills used to be an important guide for soldiers and sailors.

Mills of Hirel

The windmills introduced in France in the Middle Ages quickly lost their importance due to electrification in the country and advancing industrialization in the 20th century.
There were about a hundred mills in the bay of Mont-Saint-Michel. There were ten mills in the Hirel municipality: La Ville es Brune , La Pintonnière , La Chèvre , Saint-Lunaire , Le Moulin Carré , La Digue , Le Châtelier , La Petite Pâture , Fantou and Le Chapitre . In his article The 103 Windmills in the Pays de Dol, Alfred Jamaux assumes that the perfect location for the windmills is between Hirel and Saint-Benoît-des-Ondes .
