The Rouen deed of surrender, dated June 1, 1204

Robert de Beaumont (* around 1142; † around September 21, 1207 in Poitiers ) was Count of Meulan , as such his name was Robert II of Meulan .

He was a son of Galéran IV. De Beaumont, 1st Earl of Worcester , and Agnes, a daughter of Amalrich III. from Montfort . In 1166 he inherited the paternal county of Meulan.

In the conflict between his immediate liege lord Johann Ohneland and King Philip II August , Robert remained loyal to the former. As a result, the French king also occupied the county of Meulan on his advance into Normandy . Robert's son Peter gave up the castle of Beaumont-le-Roger without a fight, which the king then transferred to one of his followers in October 1203. The county of Meulan was incorporated into the French crown domain . While this was happening, Robert himself was entrusted with the defense of Rouen on behalf of Johann . But after the French king had quickly conquered the supposedly impregnable castle of Château-Gaillard , Robert gave up the fight and negotiated the surrender of Rouen with King Philip II on June 1, 1204, which he handed over to him a few days later.

Family and children

Around 1165 he married Maud de Dunstanville, daughter of Reginald de Dunstanville, 1st Earl of Cornwall and Beatrice FitzRichard; her children were:

  1. Mabile († 1204) ∞ William de Redvers , 5th Earl of Devon
  2. Galéran V. († around 1191) co-count of Meulan from 1183
  3. Peter († 1203)
  4. Heinrich († around 1204)
  5. Agnes ∞ Guido IV of La Roche-Guyon
  6. Johanna ∞ Robert II. D'Harcourt
