The street begins in London at High Holborn and then follows Oxford Street. At Marble Arch , the A5 road branches off to the north. The A40 continues on the Westway , an elevated road with separate lanes, which until 2000 had the character of the A40 (M) motorway. After the course of the road through the western suburbs of London, the M40 motorway joins, but the A40 swings a little further north at its eastern end at Denham roundabout and continues up to the junction with the A413 road shortly before the crossing of the M25 motorway with separate directions Lanes. At this junction it loses its character as a primary route and runs in two lanes roughly parallel to the M40 via Beaconsfield , where the A355 road crosses and High Wycombe , where the A404 road to Maidenhead and the A4010 road to Aylesbury , to the A418 road , which at Connection junction 8A of the M40 is achieved. From there on again Primary route, Oxford will be bypassed on the Northern ring route, a separate bypass road. After crossing with the A34 road , the A40, now in two lanes, continues west, bypassing Witney on a four-lane bypass to the south and crossing the A415 road . The further course to the west again two lanes, happens Burford , where the A361 road is crossed, then cruises at Northleach the A429 road , in Andoversford the road A436 and reach Cheltenham . To the west of this city, the M5 motorway is crossed at junction 11 and the A40 leads, again with separate lanes, towards Gloucester , which is bypassed to the north. A little to the west, the A48 road branches off to the southwest and initially follows the Severn . The A40 reaches Ross-on-Wye near the end of the M50 motorway . She turns southwest, branches off the A49 road towards Hereford and reaches Wales in Monmouth ( Welsh Trefynwy ). At Raglan it branches off in a trumpet to the west, while the dual carriageway continues as the A449 road to Usk , and leads to Abergavenny ( Welsh Y Fenni ) on the River Usk. There the A465 road is crossed, the A4042 road branches off to the south and the A40 runs, now two-lane, upstream on the left bank of the Usk River. The A479 road branches off north towards Llyswen . The road continues up the River Usk, bypasses Brecon ( Welsh Aberhonddu ) on a shared bypass with the A470 road in the south and follows the River Usk to Trecastle . There the valley is left and the A40 continues to Llandowery ( Welsh Llanymddyfri ) and follows the Afon Tywi downriver to Carmarthen ( Welsh Caerfyrddin ) until Llandeilo runs together with the A483 road . The A48 road joins there from the south-east, on which the Europastraße 30 runs in continuation of the M4 motorway . As far as St Clears , the A40 (at the same time E30) is developed further west with separate lanes, but not free of intersections. After the junction of the A477 road in the direction of Pembroke , the two-lane road leads to Haverfordwest ( Hwlffordd in Welsh ), where it bends sharply north. Finally she reaches Fishguard and its ferry terminal.
