course
The almost 30 km long road starts in Newport on the A48 road , crosses the M4 motorway at junction 25A , becomes the primary route there, then bypasses Cwmbran and Pontypool (in Welsh Pont-y-pŵl ) to the east and runs in north towards north Pontypool for around 5 km together with the A472 road . The four-lane expansion ends where the two streets separate again. The A4042 continues north and ends at the junction with the A40 road and the A465 road at Abergavenny.
