The road begins in Newport at junction 24 of the M4 motorway and leads in four lanes via Usk to the A40 road , with which it runs together to Ross-on-Wye . After the separation, it passes the end of the M50 motorway and leads north-northeast to Ledbury and Great Malvern . Through Worcester it loses its character as a primary route, which merges with the A4440 road , but regains it on the predominantly four-lane route to Kidderminster . There the A456 road is crossed and the A448 road coming from Redditch meets you. The road continues through Wolverhampton , where the A41 road and the A454 road intersect. Further north it connects to the M54 motorway , crosses the A5 road and runs parallel to the M6 motorway to Stafford . In Stafford the road ends on the A34 road .
