Ledbury is an English city in the county of Herefordshire in the region West Midlands in England . It is east of Hereford and west of the Malvern Hills on the River Leadon.

Surname

Ledbury, like the towns of Leominster , Bromyard and Ross-on-Wye , was probably founded on episcopal property during the time of Bishop Richard de Capella (1121-1127). At the site there was a fortified weir system (English bury), which, together with the River Leadon, gave the city its name. In the Domesday Book Ledbury was recorded as a mountain of songs.

Attractions

Ledbury Market House

Ledbury, market building

Work on the construction of a market house began in 1617. According to the records available, it was to be a two-story structure on 16 columns with a half-timbered frame and a brick infill. Market buildings like this were common at the time. The upper rooms were used to close shops or as a town hall. The attic served as a storage room for grain. Old documents here suggest that the upper rooms were used in different ways, not only for storing grain, but also for wool, hops and acorns.

Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal

The Herefordshire and Gloucestershire Canal , which opened from Gloucester to here in 1798, ran through the lower part of town with docking on Bye Street and what is now Ross Road near the Full Pitcher Public House. In 1885 part of the canal on the Ledbury-Gloucester line was used for the Ledbury and Gloucester Railway .
