Ranulph le Meschin, 3rd Earl of Chester

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ranulph le Meschin (* 1074 ; † January 1129 ) was Earl of Chester in Cheshire and Vice-Count of Avranches in Normandy . He was the son of Ranulph, vice count of Bayeux, and Marguerite, daughter of Richard le Goz, vice count of Avranches.

Life

After the Norman conquest of England and the subsequent subjugation of the north, Ranulph le Meschin received large estates, including the fiefdom of Appleby and the city of Carlisle . He followed his cousin Richard d'Avranches in 1121 as Earl of Chester and Vice-Count of Avranches.

Ranulph also became the largest landowner in Lindsey through his marriage (around 1093) to a woman named Lucy (* around 1079, † 1138) . Lucy, whose relatives and marriages are controversial, was perhaps the daughter of Turold, Sheriff of Lincoln , but more likely the maternal granddaughter of Guillaume I. Malet , Lord of Graville ( House of Malet ).
