Appleby-in-Westmorland is a locality and civil parish in the District of Eden in Cumbria , England. In 2001 it had a population of 2862. Until 1972, Appleby belonged to the county of Westmorland , the administrative seat of which was the place.

On the outskirts of the village is Appleby Castle , which is privately owned.

Appleby station (formerly Appleby West) is on the Settle – Carlisle railway line , while Appleby East station on the Eden Valley railway line was closed in 1962.
