The stadium is part of the Sportski centar Čair , a large sports and recreation area , which mainly offers training and competition facilities for numerous sports.

Between 2011 and 2013, the Čair been completely renovated with interruptions and converted it to take out the by Fudbalski savez Srbije (FSS), the Serbian Football Association, and by the FIFA or UEFA prescribed safety standards for national and international football matches and the UEFA - to meet stadium infrastructure regulations .

However, due to miscalculations and the resulting financial bottlenecks, the construction of the west stand and the stadium roof has not yet been implemented and has been suspended for the time being. According to various statements, the capacity should originally be between 24,000 and 27,000 seats .

One of the most important games played in the Čair Stadium was the semi-final first leg between the home team and Hamburger SV in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup .

history

Old Stadium (1955-2011)

The Čair Stadium was built in the 1950s and opened on September 28, 1955 with the game between FK Radnički Niš and the Greek club Iraklis Thessaloniki . It was not officially put into operation until 1963. Before it was built, there was a racetrack there . The stadium at that time was supposed to offer standing space for 20,000 spectators . It has been run by the Radnički Niš since 1969. From the beginning of the 1980s, the first extensive renovations took place at Čair, during which the west stand was roofed over and equipped with a box . In addition, a stadium intercom was installed by the Ei company and floodlights by the then major Yugoslav company Mašinska Industrija Niš (MIN). Next to the south stand, a new changing room for the professional team, which was previously located under the east stand, and rooms for the club's youth were built.

One of the most important games played there during this period was the semi-final first leg between Radnički Niš and Hamburger SV in the 1981/82 UEFA Cup , which the home team won 2-1 in front of 25,000 spectators.

From the 1990s onwards, hardly any investments were made in the stadium, making it neglected and in need of renovation. In 1995, the use of the east and north stands was finally banned for safety reasons. In 2006, 3,000 seats were installed on the west stand, but the ban on use was extended to the south stand in 2008. At the time, the stadium was hardly in a condition suitable for professional football. Discussions broke out about a possible renovation of the Čair. Plans for new buildings were discussed. Finally it was agreed that the stadium should be extensively renovated. Finally, the Nišprojekt architects from Niš developed the concept of the renovation as the main part of the planned renovation. The renovation began on March 30, 2011.

New stadium (2011 – present)

The Čair was completely renovated from 2011 to 2013 with interruptions and converted it to take out the by Fudbalski savez Srbije (FSS), the Serbian Football Association, and by the FIFA or UEFA prescribed safety standards for national and international football matches and the UEFA - to meet stadium infrastructure regulations . The Serbian government and the city of Niš approved around 1.1 billion Serbian dinars (approx. 11 million euros ) for this. After the renovation, the Serbian Football Association planned to host the World Cup qualifier against Scotland on March 23, 2013 in Čair, but the game was moved to Novi Sad as the renovation had not yet been completed, where the game was in the Karađorđe stadium and Serbia later won 2-0.

However, the stadium was opened for the domestic league and on September 15, 2012 it was officially opened with the game against FK Smederevo . Although only the west and south stands were open, Radnički Niš won the match in front of 7,000 spectators 1-0. However, due to miscalculations and the resulting financial bottlenecks, the construction of the west and stadium roofs has not yet been carried out and has been suspended for the time being. According to various statements, the capacity should originally be between 24,000 and 27,000 seats. The north and east stands have now also been released. The completion of the renovation project continues to be controversial.
