Simon III de Senlis

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Simon III de Senlis (* probably 1138; † June 1184 ) was Earl of Northampton and Earl of Huntingdon .

Life

Simon III de Senlis was the son of Simon II. de Senlis and Isabelle de Beaumont. Robert von Torigni reports that Simon III. inherited from his father in 1153. In 1174 he was recognized as the Earl of Huntingdon and Northampton.

He married Alice de Gand, only daughter of Gilbert de Gant, 1st Earl of Lincoln ( House of Gent ), and Rohaise de Claire, daughter of Richard FitzGilbert de Clare . Her known children were:

  • Gunnor, † without heir
  • Simon de Senlis, † young

Simon III died in June 1184, his wife the following year. He was buried in St Andrew's Priory in Northampton , she in Bridlington . Both apparently outlived their children. The county of Huntingdon went to David of Scotland , the son of the former Earl Henry of Scotland , who was a half-brother of Simon II. De Senlis. The county of Northampton fell back to the crown, the title was not reassigned until 1337 (to William de Bohun, 1st Earl of Northampton ).
