Clamecy |
Clamecy is a French municipality with 3759 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Nièvre in the region of Bourgogne Franche-Comté . It is the capital of the eponymous canton of Clamecy and the seat ( sub-prefecture ) of the Arrondissement of Clamecy .
geography
The city is located in the north of the Nièvre department, 40 km south of Auxerre and 70 km north of Nevers , on the banks of the Yonne River at the confluence of the Beuvron . The city center lies on a rugged rock plateau above the river. The Canal du Nivernais also runs in front of the city and connects the cities of Auxerre on the Yonne and Decize on the Loire . On its way, the canal bypasses the elevation of the Morvan , an agricultural and wooded low mountain range.
history
- The city was mentioned as early as 634 under the name Clamiciacus .
- In the 14th century it was destroyed during the Hundred Years War .
- It achieved great prosperity from the 16th to the beginning of the 20th century by rafting firewood from the forests of the Morvan to the capital Paris . At that time, Clamecy was the major transshipment point: the logs that had been cut down in the Morvan and washed ashore on the Yonne were fished out of the water and sorted in huge collecting basins. Then they were assembled into large rafts and transported on to Paris. The last rafting train left Clamecy in 1923.
For more details on logging on the Nivernais Canal, see Firewood rafting from Morvan to Paris - On June 18, 1940, German soldiers shot 44 French prisoners of war of African origin (Senegalese from the French army) who were housed in a nearby camp after one of them had attacked an SS officer.
