Mariano Etkin

Mariano Etkin (born November 5, 1943 in Buenos Aires , † May 25, 2016 in Buenos Aires) was an Argentine composer and music teacher.

Etkin studied in Buenos Aires with David Epstein , Guillermo Graetzer and Julian Emilio Martini , then at the Juilliard School of Music in New York with Luciano Berio , in Basel with Pierre Boulez , in Siena with Franco Ferrara and with Alberto Ginastera , Maurice Le Roux , Roger Sessions , Iannis Xenakis , Earle Brown and Mario Davidovsky . From 1968-69 he took lessons in electronic music from Gottfried Michael Koenig at the University of Utrecht .

Etkin was visiting professor at the Koninklijk Conservatorium Den Haag , inaugural professor at the Simon Bolivar Chair for Composition in Caracas and lecturer at the Darmstadt Summer Courses . He taught composition and music theory at McGill University in Canada and gave lectures at the State University for Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart, the Musikhögskolan Stockholm, the Folkwang Music School in Essen, the University of the Arts in Berlin and at the Conservatory for Music in Biel. Mainly he was professor of composition and music analysis at the Universidad Nacional de La Plata .

He mainly composed works for chamber music and piano pieces, as well as plays and film music. He also wrote a large number of music theory and aesthetic essays for various magazines.
