Tomb of Konrad von Lichtenberg

Conrad III. von Lichtenberg (* around 1240 in Lichtenberg (Alsace) ; † August 1, 1299 in Strasbourg ) was bishop of Strasbourg from 1273 until his death .

His father was Ludwig I von Lichtenberg , his mother is not known by name. First mentioned in 1253, Konrad could have been born around 1235.

Conrad III. did a great job of building the Strasbourg cathedral . In 1275 he laid the foundation stone for the west facade. During his tenure the nave was completed. In 1277 the westwork was started with one of the largest window rosettes in Europe. On the one hand he was very close to his city, on the other hand he fought for the interests of the House of Habsburg and the expansion of the power of his family, the Lords of Lichtenberg.

In 1299 he hurried to his brother-in-law Egino II , the Count of Freiburg im Breisgau, in his fight against the rebellious citizens of the city of Freiburg . During the siege of the city he was so badly wounded by a lance stab on July 28, 1299 (allegedly by a butcher) that he was immediately brought back to Strasbourg. He died there four days later. He was buried in the Strasbourg Cathedral.
