Walter von Geroldseck
Walter von Geroldseck (* 1231 ; † February 12, 1263 ) was Bishop of Strasbourg from 1260 until his death .
Life
Walter came from the von Geroldseck family, who were wealthy in the Black Forest , on the upper Neckar, in the Rhine valley and in Alsace . It was 1247 canon and in 1252 provost in Strasbourg . On March 27, 1260 Walter was elected Bishop of Strasbourg, but his confirmation and ordination as bishop did not take place until the beginning of the following year. His term of office was marked by the struggle against the aspirations for autonomy of the Strasbourg citizens. Walter was supported by the neighboring noble families. However, after the future King Rudolf von Habsburg switched to the Strasbourg side and took possession of the Alsatian cities of Colmar , Kaysersberg and Mulhouse , Walter's troops suffered a decisive defeat on March 8, 1262 in the Battle of Hausbergen . Walter's brother Hermann II von Hohengeroldseck , bailiff of the Ortenau , died in the battle. After a provisional peace on July 9, Walter resumed the fight in November but lost the support of his allies. A short time later, on February 12th, he died and was buried in Dorlisheim . Only his successor Heinrich made a lasting peace with the city of Strasbourg.
