Alawich II.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alawich II (first mentioned in 973; † February 3 or April 30, 1001 in Strasbourg ) was abbot of the Pfäfers monastery from 973 to 997 , abbot of the Reichenau monastery from 997 to 1000 and bishop of Strasbourg from 999 to 1001 .

Live and act

Alawich probably came from the Swabian noble family of the Counts of Sulz . He was initially a monk in Reichenau monastery and was appointed abbot of Pfäfers monastery on October 13, 973 by Otto II .

After Abbot Witigowo had been forced to abdicate in 997 , the convent of Reichenau monastery elected Alawich II as his successor. After his election, he left for Rome to be confirmed in office by Pope Gregory V. Gregory V consecrated the newly elected Reichenau abbot himself in April 998 and granted the Reichenau abbots the privilege of receiving the abbot consecration directly from the Pope and the mass with dalmatica and sandals, two pieces of vestments that were otherwise only reserved for bishops to celebrate. Apparently Alawich enjoyed not only the favor of the Pope, but also that of Emperor Otto III. , because he granted the Reichenau Abbey the right to market and mint in Allensbach in 998 and appointed Alawich II Bishop of Strasbourg in 1000 .
