Erkanbald from Strasbourg

Erkanbald , also Erchembald , (* 937/38 in Alamannien ; † July 12 / October 10, 991 presumably in Strasbourg ) was bishop of Strasbourg from 965 to 991 .

Life

Erkanbald's original name (baptismal name) was Altrich. He was in the favor of Emperor Otto I and his son Otto II , as he was a good administrator and legislator. As bishop, he consecrated more than a hundred churches and chapels in his diocese and founded a spiritual school at the cathedral. The St. Gallen monk Viktor the Blind, who came from the family of the Count of Rhaetia, was appointed director. Otto I and later his widow Adelheid von Burgund and Empress Theophanu , wife of Otto II, support the diocese of Strasbourg with donations of domains in Vinstingen and the repeated assurance of the right to mint . The emperor handed over the government of Strasbourg to him with the rank of count , with the judge's office being exercised by a bailiff appointed by the bishop . Erkanbald also accompanied the emperor on the Italian campaign. Shortly after Otto III took office. he died in 991, probably in Strasbourg.
