Wilderod
Wilderod ; also Wilderold , Wilderolf ; († 999 ) was Bishop of Strasbourg from 991 to 999 .
Life
After the death of Bishop Erkanbald of Strasbourg , Otto III. in October 991 Wilderod as his successor. Wilderod was close to the king and moved around him. In 994 he moved with him from his court camp in Ingelheim and the other princes to Sohlingen , where a Reichstag was to take place. The fact that Otto Wilderod donated a building site near the Palatinate to Ingelheim to build accommodation speaks for the closeness to the king.
With knowledge or on behalf of the king, Wilderod wrote to Gerbert Archbishop Reims in 995 . His position could no longer be maintained through a papal interdict and the actions of his opponents in Reims. Wilderod asked Gerbert to justify the removal of his predecessor Arnulf von Reims . In 996 Gerbert sent a pamphlet in the form of a prayer to Christ and other documents to Wilderod. It should also come to the knowledge of the king. He urged Wilderod to prove his innocence to the king and the German bishops and agreed to go to Rome and submit to the decision of the Pope and an upcoming council. The Reims question was also discussed at the synod in Ingelheim in February 996, in which Wilderod took part.
In the same year Wilderod accompanied the king on his first journey to Rome to Italy, where he took part in a royal court in the matter of a monastery in Pavia . In the same year he consecrated the Selz Monastery founded by Empress Adelheid .
At the end of 997 he and other greats accompanied the emperor on his second expedition to Italy. In early 998 he took part in a court session in Cremona chaired by Otto III. participate in the affairs of the local bishop. At the turn of the year 998/99 he probably also took part in the synod held by the Pope and Emperor in Rome, even if he is missing from the corresponding incomplete list of participants.
At a not clearly determinable point in time in 999, Pope Gregory V gave him the Andlau monastery with the task of reforming it.
Wilderod died at the beginning of July 999 in the imperial camp near Benevento . During a service in the presence of the emperor, the first signs of a stroke had appeared , which became clearer during the subsequent meal. He died of it after about a fortnight. In the camp in front of Benevento, the Emperor Alawich II appointed Wilderod's successor on July 9th.
