Werinher

Werinher († July 6, 1167 ) was abbot and librarian of the St. Gallen monastery from 1133 to 1167 . It was first documented in March 1134.

Act

Werinher was a custos and became abbot of the St. Gallen monastery after May 1, 1133 . After turbulent decades with the election of opposing abbots, the election of the abbot was surprisingly peaceful, as the chronicles emphasize. He directed his administration towards reforms of monastic life. In 1134 he reported to the papal legate Cardinal Dietwin some monks who did not take it very seriously with the monastic discipline . This rigid procedure in the name of monastic discipline aroused opposition from the monks, but the conflicts within the monastery were soon settled. On April 12, 1139 he received confirmation of privileges and ownership from Pope Innocent II . In 1145 he renewed the existing prayer fraternity with the Reichenau monastery . As a builder he built the churches of St. Leonhard and St. Egidius, the Pope Eugene III. placed under his protection on February 13, 1152. 1162 he was by Duke Welf of Ravensburg the monastery Ittingen purchase. Since his governor Count Udalrich von Gamertingen died without heirs , the bailiwick came into possession of St. Gallen, but was later sold by Abbot Werinher to Count Rudolf von Pfullendorf for 300 silver marks .
