Theobald (* 11th century; † August 2, 1082 ) was the bishop of Strasbourg under the pontificate of Gregory VII and the reign of King Henry IV. His episcopal office lasted only three years from 1079 to 1082. He was the successor of the Simonistic bishop Werner II von Achalm , who could not be reconciled with the Pope before his death. This did not prevent Theobald from taking sides with the king in the investiture controversy. The last two bishops brought the diocese of Strasbourg into disrepute, at least on the part of the curia .

Live and act

Theobald or Dietpold was canon of Speyer when he was promoted to the episcopal see of Strasbourg by Heinrich IV. He took part in the Council of the Prince Diocese of Bressanone in 1080, where Pope Gregory IV was again deposed by a college of oppositional bishops, cardinals and princes. In his place, the Archbishop of Ravenna, Wibert of Ravenna or Guibert of Parma, became the antipope of Clement III. chosen and enthroned .

Judging by the sources, this bishop did little for the bishopric; he is sometimes portrayed as unfaithful . In the turmoil of the investiture controversy , Theobald, like his predecessors, did not find an opportunity to mint the Strasbourg pound pfenning . According to chronicles, strange coins were also in circulation in the city during the reign of Bishops Werner , Theobald and Otto .
