Baldwin , after the old spelling Baldewin , in French Baudouin (* in the 11th century; † October 30, 1100 in Strasbourg ) was the ruling Prince-Bishop of Strasbourg from August 23 to October 30, 1100 under the rule of the Roman emperor who became emperor in 1111 -German King Heinrich V and during the pontificate of Paschal II. However, he was not a canonical bishop because he was installed in his office by the emperor with staff and ring without receiving the consecration and confirmation of the pope.

Live and act

Due to his extremely short term in office, nothing worth mentioning could objectively be recorded, which sometimes means that he is omitted in the order of the Strasbourg bishops or in historiography. In the historical and diplomatic order of the city of Strasbourg it is briefly and succinctly in the original version that Baldwin "was nuwent sehs wuchen bischof, starp" , which is confirmed by the imperial chronicle Annalista Saxo as follows: The Strasbourg bishop Otto died; Baldwin was installed for him, who lived and died for two months .

Basically, his appointment was in the continuity of the previously tense, emperor-friendly policy in the context of the investiture dispute and his successor Kuno could not bring about a change in this regard. In a dispute with the Pope, the emperor tried to assert himself for the appointment of bishops over the pontiff , who claimed the exclusivity of all decisions and appointments in terms of theology and pastoral work for himself. The fight against simony had become a priority in the Vatican not only after the death of the well-known unyielding Gregory VII , so that the unauthorized occupation of the bishopric by Henry V could only meet with great resistance from the Vatican. The Holy See refused to consent to this unilateral appointment. The Canons of Strasbourg also rejected Baldwin's appointment.

Heinrich V persisted in his decision for political and tactical reasons, and Baldwin was able to take office against this unfavorable background.
