The Annalista Saxo is the anonymous author of an important chronicle of the empire that was written in the Nienburg monastery in Anhalt . The author remains anonymous. He was often incorrectly identified with Arnold, abbot of the Berge and Nienburg monasteries .

The Chronicle of the Annalista Saxo is a collection of data and facts about the medieval German kings and their Carolingian predecessors as well as contemporary events, beginning with the year 741 and continued until 1139. The book was created in the years 1148 to 1152. The anonymous author was far over 100 handwritten old sources are available, some of which no longer exist today. The entries are arranged chronologically by year.

The identity of the chronicler is still unclear. The volume comprises 237 parchment pages . The binding dates from the 16th century. In 1993 the book was restored. The book cover is bound in brown cowhide leather , the spine is bound in sheep leather . 16 decorative letters decorate the inside of the book.

The only medieval manuscript of the work comes from Saxony. The original of the Chronicle of the Annalista Saxo is now in the Bibliothèque nationale de France in Paris. It is highly sensitive and is therefore kept under lock and key. How the book got to France is still unknown.
