Life

Wagner came with Balthasar Esterbauer to Obertheres as a journeyman , where Abbot Gregor Fuchs planned the new construction of the Benedictine abbey church and the convent building from 1715. Independent since 1718, Wagner made sculptures for the abbey and the parish church of Untertheres, which established his national reputation. He received commissions in the entire prince-bishopric and beyond, including St. Peter and Paul in Würzburg and the Banz monastery . Apprentices in his workshop were later important masters, such as his son Johann Peter Wagner and Johann Sebastian Barnabas Pfaff , who created works of art recognized in Mainz .
