St. Peter and Paul (short also St. Peterskirche , St. Peter und Peterskirche ) is a Catholic parish church in the historic center of Würzburg and a parish in the Sanderau district as well as belonging to the parish community of Würzburg city center .

history

The first Peter and Paul Church was built as a parish church in the southern suburb of Sand (outside the city wall) in Romanesque times. It was replaced by a new Gothic building in the High Middle Ages . Between 1717 and 1720, with the support of Prince Bishop Johann Philipp von Greiffenclau zu Vollraths , a new baroque building including the Romanesque towers and the Gothic choir was built according to plans by Joseph Greissing from Vorarlberg . After the war damage in March 1945 , the exterior of St. Peter and Paul was faithfully restored. The furnishings were partially restored and partially supplemented by pieces from other origins. Nothing has been preserved from the paintings made between 1720 and 1740.

From 2015 to 2016 the church underwent a thorough interior renovation. The reopening took place on November 13, 2016 in a pontifical office celebrated by Bishop Friedhelm Hofmann .

Architecture and equipment

St. Peter and Paul is a vaulted gallery basilica . The Gothic choir on the upper floor has been changed in Baroque style. The Romanesque towers came to stand behind the facade within the church hall during the new building. They were remodeled in baroque style on the outside. The three-storey facade follows the scheme of the Roman Baroque, but also shows Renaissance elements . It contains numerous statues of saints from the Wagner workshop . The central protrusion is convex.

From the facilities of the 18th century are part of the stucco , two altar paintings by Anton Clemens Lünenschloß and to 1745/50 resulting largely reconstructed after the devastation on March 16, 1945 rococo pulpit from Johann Wolfgang von der Auwera received. The St. Aquiline altar in the foremost northern side chapel contains a statue and relics of this saint. Further altars in the classical style are by Georg Schäfer . Two choir arch altars carved by Balthasar Esterbauer from 1717 to 1720 burned on March 16, 1945. The bronze epitaph with figural bronze work from Nuremberg casting workshops for the Imperial Council and Prince-Bishop Chancellor Johann, completed around 1720 by Johann Adam Roth from Forchheim, has been preserved Lorenz Adelmann († 1719).

The Petersbau , built by Antonio Petrini between 1689 and 1691 , which originally served as a seminary and at times also as a mint, is located at Peterplatz 8, near the St. Peter and Paul Church at 10 Peterplatz .

organ

Vleugels organ from 2018

The predecessor of today's organ was built in 1956 and had 26 stops on two manuals and a pedal . However, it no longer met the musical and technical requirements and was increasingly in need of repair, so that it was no longer played from 2010.

Today's organ was built from 2016 to 2018 by the organ building workshop Vleugels and consecrated on January 29, 2018 by city dean Jürgen Vorndran. The instrument has 55 registers (a total of 2015 pipes), including 20 transmissions, which are distributed over three manuals and pedal. For acoustic reasons, the sub-works of the instrument are positioned in three different places on the galleries: the main work and the pedal are on the west gallery, the swell (Récit) is on the north gallery, and the swellable positive is on the south pore. Some of the registers of the main work are also housed in a swellable manner. The instrument can be played from a free-standing mobile console on the west gallery with purely electric action and free manual assignment; A midi connection for connecting a keyboard is provided at all three organ locations. The soft lines of the prospectus design , designed by diocesan master builder Cesare Augusto Stefano, take up the elements of the baroque church architecture. The installation of a glockenspiel, which can be coupled to all manuals and the pedal, is prepared.
