Aquilin , also Wezelin (* around 970 in Würzburg , † before 1018 in Milan ), is a saint of the Catholic Church who is particularly venerated in Milan and in Würzburg. His biography is uncertain. Even the details of his life data fluctuate by centuries. His feast day is January 29th .

Life

Aquilin was provost at Cologne Cathedral . In this capacity he made a trip to Rome and stopped in Milan. There he was ambushed and stabbed by a group of heretics .

Adoration

The liturgical veneration of Aquiline began in Milan around 1400 with the miraculous discovery of his remains. They were buried in the Basilica of S. Lorenzo in the Genesius Chapel. This was renamed Cappella di Sant'Aquilino in the 16th century under Charles Borromeo .

In 1705 and 1854 relics of the saint were transferred to the Würzburg churches of St. Marien (the Marienkapelle on the market square) and St. Peter and Paul . The baroque shrine of the St. Aquilinius relic in the Lady Chapel dates from 1715.
