Ferdinand Frantz , actually Johann Ferdinand Franz (born February 8, 1906 in Kassel , † May 25, 1959 in Munich ) was a German opera singer ( bass baritone , originally bass ).

Life

He did some self-taught training and made his debut in Kassel in 1927, sang 1930–1932 in Halle (Saale) , 1932–1937 in Chemnitz , 1937–1943 at the Hamburg State Opera , during this time mainly bass parts ( Rocco , König Marke ...) . From 1943 until his death he sang at the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , and from 1949 also gave guest appearances at the Metropolitan Opera , at La Scala in Milan and in Covent Garden . He is best known to today's music lover for the recordings of the Ring (1953, radio) and the Walküre (1954, studio) directed by Wilhelm Furtwängler , as well as the recording of the Meistersinger von Nürnberg (1956) directed by Rudolf Kempe .

Ferdinand Frantz was due to his very persistent and finely nuanced voice as one of the best Wotans (including Wilhelm Furtwängler's favorite in this role) and Hans Sachs of his time. In the 1950s, however, signs of wear and tear of his otherwise very powerful organ began to appear.

It rests in the Munich forest cemetery .
