Hugo von Preen

Hugo von Preen (born May 25, 1854 in Easter mountain near Braunau [today district of Braunau], † February 24, 1941 ibid) was an Austrian painter and local researcher .

Hugo von Preen was born in Easterberg near Braunau in 1854 as the son of an officer. The family came from Mecklenburg . He spent his childhood and youth in Weinheim ( Baden-Württemberg ). From 1873 he studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and from 1882 he lived and worked as a freelance painter in Easterberg. In 1884 he was a co-founder of the Osternberg Artists' Colony , which existed until the turn of the century and had a decisive influence on Munich painting at the time. In 1923 he established the Innviertler Künstlergilde together with Aloys Wach and Louis Hofbauer . In the same year Wilhelm Dachauer joined the group.

Von Preen was mainly a landscape painter , but also dealt with portraits , animals and hunting pictures . He preferred the small format and designed several series of postcards .

He was also known as an excavator and local history researcher. In Uttendorf around 1884/85 his employees discovered a Hallstatt- era choker and in Ranshofen he examined a Carolingian Palatinate . He published most of the research results himself. He paid particular attention to popular life in the Innviertel . In 1916/17 he set up a replica of an Innviertel farmhouse in the Braunau bell foundry house. This presentation can be seen unchanged to this day. His archaeological finds are exhibited in the Upper Austrian provincial museums .
