Hans Jürgen Schmitt (born August 3, 1930 in Dortmund ; † May 25, 2014 in Aachen ) was a German physicist and professor of high frequency technology at RWTH Aachen University from 1980.

Life

Hans Jürgen Schmitt grew up in Berlin. He studied physics at the University of Göttingen , where he received his diploma in 1954 and 1955, when Erwin Meyer in the field of high frequency technology with a thesis on microwave absorber doctorate . Then he became an assistant professor at the Harvard University in the United States . The main research areas were antenna technology and electromagnetics. From 1963 to 1965 he worked at the Sperry Rand Research Center.

In 1965 Schmitt moved to Hamburg to the Philips Research Laboratory in Vogt-Kölln-Straße. From 1968 he headed the research department for applied physics with the main areas of work laser optics, solid state physics and microwave technology.

In 1980 Schmitt became professor and head of the Institute for High Frequency Technology at RWTH Aachen University. The main research areas there were optical communication, optical sensors, optical measurements and microwave technology. He was also involved in international exchanges, especially with India and China. In 1996 Schmitt retired .

From 1981 to 1996 he was a lecturer at the German National Academic Foundation .

Schmitt was married and had three daughters and a son.
