The VDE Association of Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies e. V. (VDE) is a technical and scientific association founded in Germany in 1893 under the name Association of German Electrical Engineers (VDE) .

Association

organization

The VDE Association of Electrical Engineering Electronics Information Technology eV is one of the largest technical and scientific associations in Europe. It has 36,000 members (including 1,300 companies) and 1,600 employees (as of 2018). The VDE combines science, standardization and product testing under one roof. The VDE is particularly committed to promoting research and young talent as well as consumer protection . The main topics of the association are:

  • Cyber security
  • Energy
  • Industry
  • Mobility
  • Smart Cities
  • Health
  • Living

network

The headquarters of the VDE is Frankfurt am Main, the association has further representative offices in Berlin and Brussels. There are also state representations and 29 district associations nationwide. In North America and Asia, the VDE is represented by branches of VDE Global Services GmbH. In Europe, the VDE is present in Italy, France, Poland, Turkey and Spain, among others.

Professional societies

In the five professional associations of the VDE, experts from science and industry deal with topics relating to electrical / information technology and its applications:

Standardization and standardization

The German Commission for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies of DIN and VDE (DKE) is the body for electrotechnical standardization in Germany and develops standards and safety regulations for electrical engineering, electronics and information technology. It represents German interests in the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and in the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Network technology and operation

The Forum Network Technology / Network Operation in the VDE (FNN) develops VDE application rules and technical information for the safe and reliable operation of transmission and distribution networks. Members are companies, organizations, scientific institutions and authorities.

VDE seal of approval

Testing and certification

In the non-profit VDE Testing and Certification Institute, headquartered in Offenbach, the independent testers of the VDE Institute test more than 100,000 devices per year. If the product passes the tests, it receives the VDE mark, a triangle. With VDE Global Services GmbH, the VDE Institute performs tests and certifications worldwide.

Standards and publications

As a specialist publisher for electrical engineering and information technology, VDE Verlag publishes the latest VDE standards, specialist books and specialist journals. The VDE-Verlag has also been offering seminars since 2014.

Technology consulting

VDI / VDE Innovation + Technik GmbH (VDI / VDE-IT) is a project sponsor as well as service and consulting company and promotes innovative projects and companies at home and abroad.

Promotion of young talent

Around 70 university groups, 8,000 students and 6,000 young professionals are involved in the VDE Young Net. You plan projects, exchange knowledge, tips and experiences, use direct contacts to professors and industrial companies at home and abroad. Together with the BMBF, the VDE organizes student competitions such as Invent a Chip and SolarMobil Germany, in which young people are introduced to technology at an early stage.

history

The triumphant advance of electrical energy from the second half of the 19th century led to the development of a separate branch of technology, electrical engineering . In the 1870s, Werner Siemens recognized the immense importance and potential of the new technology direction and turned to the postmaster general Heinrich von Stephan with these considerations: “In addition to telegraphy , which has already been steered into somewhat calmer development paths, we see [...] Everywhere a wild race in the field of electrical engineering, a restless striving for electricity to conquer an important place in the old branches of industry and to establish new ones in them. All of these endeavors have so far lacked an orderly, corrective focus. ”Stephan then approved the establishment of an association that should take over the regulatory function. In January 1879, the first Berlin electrical engineering association was founded, initially responsible for the safety of electrical engineering systems, clarifying the use of direct or alternating current, and exchanges between the operators of low-voltage and high- voltage systems. But the problems continued to increase, so that a national association seemed necessary. The greatest proponent of such an institution was Adolf Slaby , who was a professor at the Technical University of Charlottenburg in the 1880s . In a circular sent in 1892, he urged the electrical engineering associations “... Only by purposefully combining our intellectual resources can we hope to have a lasting effect on the successful representation of our interests. If you agree with this view, we hereby kindly invite you to take part in a meeting that will take place in Berlin in November or December. [...] “Numerous engineers and scientists accepted the invitation; however, the founding meeting was postponed to the following year due to the death of Siemens (December 6). When 37 representatives from the field of electrical engineering met on January 21, 1893 in the Yellow Hall of the Hotel Kaiserhof , they clarified the necessary organizational issues. The following day, at a banquet organized by Emil Rathenau in his house, the Association of German Electrical Engineers was founded . Adolf Slaby and Georg Wilhelm von Siemens were elected as the first provisional board members . A co-signer of the charter was u. a. also Emil Arnold Budde .

In the following decades, the association members adapted both the name and the tasks of the association to the current technical requirements.

Special stamp "100 years of the Association of German Electrical Engineers" (1993)

On the occasion of the centenary of 1993, the Deutsche Bundespost issued the special stamp “100 Years of the Association of German Electrical Engineers”.
