He learned the building trade in the company of the Swiss architect Giovanni Gilardi , with whose son Domenico he studied under Francesco Camporesi in the architecture school at the Kremlin Building Department. At the age of 22, Grigoryev gained his personal freedom.

Grigoryev entered the civil service as an architectural assistant in 1808 and then became the state architect of the widow's house on Kudrinskaya Ploshchad in Moscow. He continued to work with Domenico Gilardi until his return to Switzerland in 1832. Joint projects included the Suchanowo manor near Widnoje (1813) and the building of the Opekunski Soviet (1823-1826, Uliza Soljanka 14, Moscow). Independently of Girardi, Grigoryev built the Church of the Assumption (1798–1816, Bolshaya Nikitskaya Ulitsa, Moscow) based on a project by Joseph Bové . Together with Bové, Grigoryev rebuilt the Dokuchayev city courtyard in Moscow's Mjasnitskaya Ulitsa after the fire in Moscow in 1819–1821. Kosma Terentjewitsch Soldatjonkow bought the courtyard in 1857 and had it modernized in the 1870s by Alexander Ivanovich Resanov .

Grigoryev's own works were the Khrushchev Seleznev mansion (1814–1816, Uliza Pretschistenka 12/2, Moscow, since 1961 State Pushkin Museum), the Lopuchin House (1817–1822, Uliza Pretschistenka 11, Moscow, now the Tolstoy Museum ), the Trinity Church in Yershovo near Zvenigorod (1820s), the Church of the Resurrection in the Vagankovo Cemetery (1824) and his own house at 8 Miljutinsky Pereulok in Moscow.

Grigoryev was married twice. His first wife was the sister of the architects Fyodor and Alexander Mikhailovich Shestakov . His second wife was the widow Fyodor Shestakov. Grigoryev's brother Dormidont was also an architect of the Empire.
