The Kulma Pass ( Chinese  闊 勒 買 山口  /  阔 勒 买 山口 , Pinyin Kuòlèmǎi Shānkǒu ) is a 4362  m high mountain pass over the Pamir , which connects the Autonomous Province of Berg-Badachschan ( Tajikistan ) with the Uyghur Autonomous Region Xinjiang in China .

The only official border crossing between Tajikistan and the People's Republic of China along the 414 km long common border is located at the Kulma Pass , the Karasu-Kulma border crossing ( Chinese  卡拉蘇 - 闊 勒 買 口岸  /  卡拉苏 - 阔 勒 买 口岸 , Pinyin Kǎlāsū- Kuòlèmǎi Kǒu'àn ).

The pass is located on the Tajik side 80 km from Murgab and 850 km from Dushanbe ; On the Chinese side, Taxkorgan is about 60 km and Kashgar 220 km from the pass. It connects the Pamir Highway with the Karakoram Highway .

The road over the Kulma Pass was completed in 1999 and the border crossing opened on May 25, 2004. The traffic importance was initially low. In the first three months after the opening, the Tajik Ministry of Transport counted 17 trucks, 10 buses, 240 tons of cargo and 171 people legally crossing the border via the Kulma Pass. In 2006, over nine thousand tons of cargo worth $ 4.5 million had already been transported across the pass. Until 2007, the border crossing was only open 15 days a month and only between May and November; since May 1, 2008, it has been open between May and November, except on weekends and public holidays. In 2012 it was possible for the first time to pass the Kulma Pass in the winter months.

Since the local population hardly has passports , illegal border crossings are likely to be in the majority.
