The Taxkorgan ( Chinese 塔什库尔干 河 ; Pinyin Tǎshíkù'ěrgàn Hé) is a left tributary of the Yarkant in the far northwest of the People's Republic of China .

River course

The Taxkorgan rises at the Wakhjir Pass in the Pamir Mountains . From there it initially flows in an easterly direction, then turns north and flows through a broad high valley. He passes the large parish of Taxkorgan . Later it turns again to the east and breaks through the eastern Pamirs. Eventually he meets the Yarkant flowing north.

Use of hydropower

At the beginning of the 21st century, two hydropower projects were realized on the middle and lower reaches of the Taxkorgan. The 78 m high Xiabandi Dam ( ) dams the central reaches of the Taxkorgan over a length of 14.5 km. A tunnel leads to the hydropower plant down the valley ( ). This has 3 units of 50 MW each. Almost 2 kilometers below the power plant is the 16.8 m high dam ( ) of the Qirehazier hydropower project (alternative name: Qirehataer ). The water reaches the downstream power station ( ) via a 15.66 km long tunnel , which has 3 units of 70 MW each.
