Otomar Kvěch

Otomar Kvěch (born May 25, 1950 in Prague ; † March 16, 2018 there ) was a Czech composer and music teacher .

Kvěch had piano and music lessons from the age of five and attended a state music school from 1959. From 1963 he had three years of lessons with Jan Zdeněk Bartoš ; During this time, the first compositions were written (including a string quartet and a symphony). From 1965 he studied organ with Josef Kunbáň , composition with Miroslav Raichl , František Kovaříček and JZ Bartoš as well as counterpoint and harmony with Zdeněk Hůla at the Prague Conservatory .

From 1969 Kvěch attended the composition class of Jiří Pauer at the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague . In 1973 he graduated with an organ symphony. During this time he worked as a répétiteur at the National Theater and, as a composer, was in close contact with composers of the same age as Vladimír Tichý , Miroslav Kubička , Pavel Jeřábek , Štěpán Rak , Juraj Filas and Jiří Gemrot .

In 1976 Kvěch became music editor for the Czechoslovak Radio . His compositions were performed at the New Creation Week , the Young Podium in Karlovy Vary and the Prague Spring , and were published in print and on records. In 1980 he became secretary of the Czech Composers Union. In the 1990s he resumed work for the Czechoslovak Radio as an editor and dramaturge, and he also began teaching music theory and composition at the Prague Conservatory .

Among other things, Kvěch composed five symphonies, nine string quartets, three violin and four organ sonatas, several song cycles, oratorios, a mass and a requiem.
