Georg Abbt (born May 25, 1716 in St. Gallen ; † October 3, 1757 ibid) was a Swiss Protestant clergyman.

Life

Georg Abbt was the son of pastor Ulrich Abbt and his wife Catharina, b. Zollikofer.

He received his initial theological training from his father and from the dean Bartholome Wegelin (1683–1757) in St. Gallen. After being accepted into the St. Gallen parish council in 1738, he worked as a private tutor.

In 1744 he became archdeacon in Mollis , but came back to St. Gallen-Linsebühl in 1745 as a Sunday evening preacher. When he preached, not only was the church overcrowded, but from outside the citizens huddled with ladders at the windows to hear him.

In 1752 he became a hospital pastor in St. Gallen and from 1753 he was a Sunday evening teacher in the city.

Georg Abbt married Sara Zollikofer, daughter of Josef Zollikofer, on November 9, 1745. They had three children together:

  • Ottilia Abbt (February 1, 1747; † 1814)
  • Barbara Abbt (born January 6, 1752: † September 8, 1826), married to goldsmith David Stähelin
  • Judith Abbt (born May 30, 1755; † 1757)

Spiritual work

Georg Abbt developed a tendency towards ecclesiastical separatism and was the head of the St. Gallen mystics .
