J. Jürgen Seidel

Johannes Jürgen Seidel (born February 24, 1945 in Dorfstadt , Saxony ; citizen of Selma GR ; † October 25, 2019 ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and church historian .

Life

Seidel studied from 1964 at the Theological Seminary in Leipzig and the University of Leipzig . He passed his theological state examination in 1970 and was ordained in 1974 . He then worked as a parish priest in Davos Platz, Valzeina , Schaffhausen (an St. Johann ) and Zurich-Leimbach . From 1983 to 1985 he carried out research on the history of the Protestant Church in the Soviet Zone / GDR from 1945 to 1953 on behalf of the Swiss National Fund and received his doctorate in theology in 1985 from the Theological Faculty of the University of Zurich . In 2001 he completed his habilitation at the same faculty with a thesis on Pietism in Graubünden .

From 2008, Seidel was titular professor for modern church history at the theological faculty of the University of Zurich and head of the research center there on the history of radical pietism , which he founded in 2009. He was the author of several books, especially on Swiss and German church history from the 17th to the 20th centuries.

Seidel wrote numerous articles in the Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikon (BBKL).
