William Avner “Bill” Paschal (born May 28, 1921 in Atlanta , Georgia , USA , † May 25, 2003 in Marietta , Georgia) was an American American football player . He played as a running back in the National Football League (NFL) with the New York Giants and the Boston Yanks .
career
College career
Bill Paschal played football in high school and was elected to the Georgia national team for his athletic achievements. After leaving school he studied at the Georgia Institute of Technology where he played between 1938 and 1939 Football . Due to a knee injury, he was unable to play as a football player in his senior year. The severity of the injury meant the end of his football career. Immediately after graduating, he therefore worked as a switchman for the railroad . His former college coach , however, drew the attention of the American sports journalist Grantland Rice to him, who in turn turned to the coach of the New York Giants Steve Owen with this information .
Professional career
Paschal was able to convince in a trial training and the Giants offered him a contract with an annual income of 1,500 US dollars and a one-time bonus of 2,500 US dollars in 1943 . Paschal accepted and played for the Giants together with Tuffy Leemans as fullback in the Giants' offensive backfield . Paschal set up numerous season bests in his rookie year . He scored the most touchdowns - 12, the highest amount of space gained by running play - 572 yards and had the most attempts at running . In the same year the Giants managed to move into the play-offs , but where they failed prematurely.
In 1944, Tim Mara , the owner of the Giants, granted him an income of $ 4,000. Paschal entered the Giants' record list again this year. He got nine touchdowns and a space gain of 737 yards in 196 attempts. The Giants moved into the NFL final, where they had to face the Green Bay Packers . Paschal could not convince in the game and only achieved a space gain of 3 yards with a running game. The Packers, supervised by Curly Lambeau , won the game 14: 7. During the 1947 season, Paschal moved to the Boston Yanks and ended his career there after the 1948 season.
According to the NFL
After his career, Paschal returned to Georgia and ran his family's company. In 1987 he retired. Bill Paschal was married and had three daughters. He is buried in Westview Cemetery in Atlanta .
Honors
Bill Paschal is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame . He was voted All-Pro three times .
