George band
George Band OBE (born February 2, 1929 in Taiwan , † August 26, 2011 in Hampshire ) was a British mountaineer . He started mountaineering in the Alps when he was a student at Queens College , Oxford.
In 1953 he took part in the successful Mount Everest expedition. He was the youngest climber there, but was not on the summit. On May 25, 1955, he and Joe Brown were the first to climb the Kangchenjunga . Out of respect for the religious feelings of the Nepalese, they stopped a few meters below the summit. Most mountaineers have followed this tradition ever since.
