biography

origin

It is said that Petrus was born in the Campania region , which allows different interpretations of his origins, but suggests Champagne .

Career

He began his career as the papal chaplain to Honorius III. and later Gregory IX. in the years 1217 to 1236. In 1217 Pierre de Colmieu is mentioned as a Magister (probably from the University of Paris) and as a listener (auditor) at the Roman Curia . In the following year he accompanied Pandulf , later Bishop of Norwich , as papal chaplain , on his legation trip to England. Pope Honorius III. finally sent him on a difficult mission to Paris , where he stayed from 1220 to 1222.

As a professor of theology at the University of Paris , he took part in the elections of the Bishop of Châlons-en-Champagne (1226), the Archbishop of Tours and the Bishop of Thérouanne (both 1229). At the end of 1229 he entered the service of the papal legate Cardinal Romano Bonaventura , whose representative he was in the embassy to the Albigensians . In 1229 Petrus de Collemedio became canon in the cathedral of Thérouanne and in 1230 apostolic nuncio for the south of France. He took an active role in the peace treaty between King Louis IX. of France and Raymond VII of Toulouse on April 12, 1229. From February 21, 1230 to December 1236, he was Pierre II provost of the Collegiate Church of Our Lady of Saint-Omer .

Archbishop of Rouen

After the death of Maurice, Archbishop of Rouen, on March 30, 1235, the Archdeacon of Caux , Guillaume de Dunelmo, who was also a Masters in English in Paris, was elected as the new Archbishop, but the latter refused the election. After the Holy See had been called and a new election took place on April 4, 1236, Pope Gregory IX confirmed . on August 12, 1236 Petrus II. de Colmieu as Archbishop of Rouen. He was ordained bishop in the Cathedral of Rouen by the Bishop of Avranches , Guillaume de Saint-Mère-Église, on August 9, 1237 and received the pallium on the same day.

In order to settle disputes between the Archbishop and the Crown regarding the Louviers forest , property was exchanged with the Roumare forest (106 ha) in 1239.

On the way to a council in Rome , where Emperor Frederick II was to be excommunicated, those Genoese ships were intercepted on the island of Giglio , on which bishops and cardinals from all over Europe were. In the course of this, Archbishop Peter and other bishops were captured on May 1, 1241 by Enzio of Sardinia , an illegitimate son of Emperor Frederick II . Only through the intercession of King Louis IX. he was released from France in 1243 . In August and September 1243 he and two later cardinals were sent to Emperor Friedrich II to negotiate about an end to the hostilities.

Cardinal Bishop of Albano

In the course of the consistory of May 28, 1244, Pope Innocent IV appointed Petrus de Collemedio as cardinal bishop Petrus IV of the suburbicarian Roman Catholic diocese of Albano . He accepted this papal bull between January 23, 1245 and June 11, 1252. Peter stayed from there in Lyon , where he took part in the First Council of Lyon .

Even after his appointment as Cardinal Bishop in Lazio, Peter still had a special relationship with Rouen. In 1245 he founded the well-known college at the Cathedral of Rouen , which was named Court of Albano (la cour d'Albane) because of Petrus' elevation to Cardinal of Albano .
