Anselm von Meißen (* 1210 ; † 1278 in Elbing ) was a priest of the Teutonic Order and Bishop of Warmia .

Life

Anselm, who probably came from the Margraviate of Meißen , is documented as a priest of the Teutonic Order as early as 1245. After the resignation of the Bishop of Warmia, but not in possession of the diocese, Heinrich von Streitberg OT was appointed Bishop of Warmia in mid-1250 and on August 28, 1250 in Valenciennes (Flanders) by the papal legate Petrus de Collemedio , Cardinal Bishop of Albano (1244–1253), consecrated , has been recorded in his diocese since April 27, 1251 .

Anselm was the first bishop of Warmia to actually take office and was responsible for the basic organization of the diocese. In 1254, the borders between the diocese, later called Warmia, and the monastic land were established. In Warmia, Anselm was sovereign, in the monastic country he was only entitled to ecclesiastical jurisdiction. He chose Braunsberg as the bishopric, elevated the church of St. Andreas to a cathedral in 1260 (today the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin and St. Andrew ) and established a cathedral chapter with 16 members.

In 1261 Pope Urban IV appointed him legate for Bohemia, Moravia and the church provinces of Gniezno , Riga and Salzburg , probably at the instigation of the order . Anselm began to settle German farmers from Lower Germany, Moravia and Silesia in the diocese . This process was continued by the later bishops until the middle of the 14th century. The German settlers and the native Prussians merged into a German-speaking population by the 16th century.

Anselm's long term of office fell into the years of the conquest of Prussia by the Teutonic Order, in whose war campaigns Anselm took an active part. In 1255 he took part in the crusade of King Ottokar II of Bohemia. In 1260, however, like the other bishops with his cathedral chapter, he had to flee from the rebellious Prussians and took his seat in Reichenbach in the Duchy of Breslau . At times he performed episcopal ordinations in Olomouc and Breslau . He was only able to return to his diocese in 1277. He died in Elbing in 1278, and according to tradition, he was buried in the St. Anna chapel in Elbląg Castle.

On July 3, 2010 the Grand Master and Abbot General of the Teutonic Order Bruno Platter unveiled a memorial stone for Bishop Anselm on the "Bischofsweg" in Balden (Bałdy) .
