Heinrich Eduard Frommknecht (born May 8, 1932 in Konstanz ; † May 25, 2018 there ) was a German insurance manager . From 1974 to 1997 he was CEO of Signal Insurance in Dortmund (today: Signal Iduna ).

origin

Heinrich Frommknecht's parents came from both farming families near Waltershofen in Upper Swabia. His mother died when he was nine years old. Frommknecht grew up in Paradise in Constance and was an altar boy in St. Stephen's Church , the oldest of the Constance churches. He was a pupil of the Heinrich-Suso-Gymnasium Konstanz and performance rower in the eighth of the "Rowing Club Neptune Konstanz".

Professional activity

In 1949, Frommknecht joined the Signal Group and completed an apprenticeship as an insurance salesman in Konstanz as well as a degree in business administration at the Cologne University of Applied Sciences . After working in Stuttgart and Dortmund, he became head of the support fund for craft, trade and commerce HHG in Stuttgart in 1968 , which was active in the field of company pension schemes. In the course of the merger with Signal-Versicherungen AG in Dortmund, he became a board member of Signal Versicherungen AG .

From 1974 to 1997 Frommknecht was chairman of the board (initially as "general director") of Signal Versicherungen AG and until 2010 he was also deputy chairman of the various supervisory boards of the Signal Iduna group . In 2010 he became an honorary member of the Supervisory Board of Signal Iduna health insurance .

From 1984 to 1990 he was also chairman of the Association of Private Health Insurance (PKV) , deputy chairman of the Employers' Association of Insurance Companies in Germany (AGV) and member of the Presidium of the German Insurance Association (GDV) . For many years he was chairman of the insurance industry's vocational training center and was involved in other educational policy initiatives.

During his time as PKV chairman, Frommknecht secured the start-up funding for the German AIDS Foundation , for which he was awarded the Great Federal Cross of Merit in 1991.

From 1985 to 2004 Frommknecht was a member, from 1996 chairman of the administrative board of RWI - Leibniz Institute for Economic Research . For many years he was chairman and most recently honorary chairman of the Society for Westphalian Economic History as well as chairman of the advisory board of the economics department of the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences .

Frommknecht was also Vice President of the Dortmund Chamber of Commerce for many years, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Dortmund Volksbank and co-founder of the Dortmund Cultural Foundation , of which he was Chairman from 1997 to 2008. He was involved in the support group of the Dortmund Konzerthaus .

In his home town of Konstanz, he was involved in setting up a pension scheme for the employees of the Konstanz Chamber of Crafts .

Together with his wife, he is the namesake of the Heinrich and Christa Frommknecht Foundation , which was founded in 2000 with the purpose of promoting science and research, education and training, art and culture and international understanding. The "Heinrich Frommknecht Prize" is awarded annually to the best of the year at the Institute for Insurance Studies at the Technical University of Cologne, as well as sponsorship prizes for the best graduate in actuarial mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics at TU Dortmund University and for students at the International School of Management Dortmund . The foundation capital is 400,000 euros.

Private

On September 16, 1967, Frommknecht married Christa Röder. The marriage remained childless.

Frommknecht was also an art collector. He collected pictures of Lake Constance by Bruno Epple , Hans Breinlinger and Otto Dix, among others . He worked with the Städtische Wessenberg-Galerie in Konstanz. Frommknecht was the editor of two art volumes with images of Lake Constance.

The painter and visual artist Heinrich Vogel was Frommknecht's uncle and godfather.

Frommknecht was a sponsor of the Konstanz Symphonic Choir and the Southwest German Philharmonic in Konstanz . For decades he was also actively associated with the Konstanzer Blätzlebuebe-Zunft, one of the great fools' guilds of the traditional Swabian-Alemannic carnival .
