German AIDS Foundation

The German AIDS Foundation is a foundation under civil law that emerged from the merger of the German AIDS Foundation "Live Positively" with the National AIDS Foundation. These were established in 1987 by the Hamburg pastor Rainer Ehlers and the Association of Private Health Insurance e. V., the German Red Cross and Daimler AG , then Daimler-Benz AG. The foundation is based in Bonn .

Foundation purpose

The foundation helps HIV- positive and AIDS- infected people in material need. In addition, it supports the project work of local AIDS aid organizations. The foundation has also supported selected international projects since 2000. At the same time, it is constantly striving to bring the issue of HIV / AIDS to the public, to inform and educate them, and thus to help those affected to gain greater acceptance in society.

Particularly noteworthy is the opera gala, which has been held annually at the Deutsche Oper Berlin in aid of the German AIDS Foundation since 1994 and which is moderated initially by Loriot until 2006 and by Max Raabe since 2007 .

Since the German AIDS Foundation was founded, up to 2017 more than 45 million euros were donated to those affected and projects and over 86,000 people in need were helped. This makes it the largest AIDS aid organization in Germany, which is also privately financed without ongoing government support. The focus of their international project funding is in southern Africa, which is particularly hard hit by HIV and AIDS, especially in South Africa, Kenya and Mozambique.

In addition to its direct support, the foundation is indirectly involved in the form of public relations. Above all, benefit projects such as the festive opera galas in Berlin, Düsseldorf and Bonn or the benefit art auction in the art and exhibition hall of the Federal Republic of Germany and the biennial media prize of the German AIDS Foundation are intended to make the topic of AIDS public To raise awareness. As a German cooperation partner of the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative (IAVI), the foundation is also committed to the development of an HIV vaccine . The foundation has been awarded the DZI seal of approval for the responsible use of donations .
