Xavier Zubiri

Xavier Zubiri (born December 4, 1898 in Donostia-San Sebastián , † September 21, 1983 in Madrid ) was a Spanish philosopher. He represented a Christian existential philosophy .

From 1926 to 1936, Zubiri studied theology , philosophy and natural sciences in Madrid. He was a student of José Ortega y Gasset and Martin Heidegger . After the Spanish Civil War , he was Professor of Philosophy History in Barcelona from 1940 to 1942 before settling in Madrid as a private scholar.

philosophy

Zubiri took a critical look at positivism , pragmatism and historicism . According to him, the crisis of the modern natural sciences can only be overcome through a further developed ontology of nature, with philosophy and ( Catholic ) theology on the one hand and natural sciences on the other hand forming complementary ways of knowing reality. Man, a radical ontological nothing , has the task, determined by an individual connection to God , to choose himself and to realize it in his actions.
