History and Development
Before 1945
The Dortmunder Volksbank goes back to a cooperative commercial bank with limited liability that was founded on February 7, 1899. The 23 founding members, men from craft and trade, intended to conduct banking business "for the purpose of obtaining the funds necessary for the trade and economy of the members". After initially difficult times, the balance sheet total for the ten-year existence was one million marks. In 1918 the company moved into its own building for the first time. The inflation of the year drove the balance sheet total to astronomical heights, at the end of 1923 it was over a trillion marks. After the devaluation to Rentenmark, only 19 pfennigs of equity remained. In 1924, the new stable currency brought about a rapid normalization of business life.
After 1945
In 1965, the bank followed the recommendation of the German Cooperative Association to change the name Gewerbebank to "Dortmunder Volksbank". In 1971 Volksbank Castrop-Rauxel was taken over by merger and continued as a branch. Numerous other branches were established in the 1970s; Business volume, total assets and membership grew rapidly. After the merger with Volksbank Hörde eG in 1985 and the merger with Volksbank Dortmund-Asseln in 1986, the balance sheet total rose to 1.25 billion marks. The branch network in Dortmund, Castrop-Rauxel and Lünen-Brambauer grew to a total of 42 bank branches. Further mergers took place in 1995 with the bank for civil servants and employees and in 2003 with the Volksbank Unna Schwerte.
In 1999 the Dortmunder Volksbank celebrated its 100th anniversary.
In 2013 the Dortmunder Volksbank merged with Volksbank Hamm. In 2019, the merger with Volksbank Waltrop took place . In 2020, Volksbank Kamen-Werne started merger talks with Volksbank Dortmund.
