David Atlas
David Atlas (born May 25, 1924 in Brooklyn , New York City , † November 10, 2015 ) was an American meteorologist . He is considered one of the pioneers of weather radar .
Life
David Atlas was born to Jewish immigrants in New York in 1924 and attended elementary school in Brooklyn. During the Second World War he served with the United States Army Air Corps , where he first came into contact with the then new radar technology . After the World War he stayed with the United States Air Force and worked at the Air Force Cambridge Research Laboratories in Bedford (Massachusetts) with topics from meteorology, such as the determination of wind speeds using the Doppler effect in radar devices. From 1966 to 1972 he was Professor of Meteorology at the University of Chicago, then director at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) until 1976 . Work by him and his group from this period led to the NEXRAD weather radar system now in use in the United States .
In 1977, Atlas founded the Laboratory for Atmospheric Sciences at Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt within the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and stayed there until his retirement in 1984. He continued to work in radar-based meteorology after his retirement . In 2004 he received the Dennis J. Picard Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) for his work on weather radar.
