The Savona – San Giuseppe cable cars (Italian: Funivie Savona – San Giuseppe ) are two parallel material cable cars operated by Funivie SpA , which connect the port of Savona with San Giuseppe di Cairo in the municipality of Cairo Montenotte . They are the longest operating cable cars in the world.

The Lorenbahnen are used to transport bulk goods - mainly coal - from the port of Savona over the Apennines to the hinterland. Thanks to the cable cars, despite the limited space in the port of Savona, it is possible to unload larger quantities of bulk goods and transport them towards northern Italy. In San Giuseppe the goods are transferred to the railroad. Coal is often shipped in bulk to Italiana Coke's coking plant , which is directly connected to the cable car. The system can save around three hundred truck journeys between Savona and San Giuseppe every day.

The two 16.651 kilometers long bicable gondolas , built side by side, each consist of four sections. The first section goes from San Rocco on the A10 autostrada at the San Lorenzo intermediate station , where it is diverted towards the west before ending in Ciatti . The other intermediate stops are Cadibona and Sella . The route runs roughly straight from San Lorenzo in the direction of San Giuseppe , also crossing the A6 autostrada . As is usual with orbits with several sections, the trolleys are uncoupled from the cable in the intermediate stations and roll on rails to the beginning of the next section, where they are coupled to the cable again. The bulk goods are removed from the freighter in the deep-water port at berth 29 and, if necessary, temporarily stored in one of the seven covered silos with a total capacity of 54,000 cubic meters. From there, it is transported on a 500-meter-long conveyor belt in the quay wall before it is transferred to a 1,100-meter-long underground conveyor belt that brings the bulk goods under the port to the valley station of the cable car in San Rocco .

In San Giuseppe there is a 12-hectare transshipment area that can store up to 600,000 tons of bulk goods. It is planned to cover the area in order to prevent material washout.

The carrying rope of the material web has a diameter of 50 mm, the pull rope a diameter of 25 mm. Line 1 has 194 supports, line 2 has 193. The highest point of the system is 520 meters above sea level. There are 1200 trucks in operation, each of which can transport a maximum of 1100 kilograms of bulk material. The trolleys are hung on the rope at a distance of 65 meters, which gives the system a maximum transport capacity of 420 tons per hour at a conveying speed of 3.5 meters per second.

history

The first Lorenbahn was built in 1912. The valley station was on the site of the former Miramar bathing beach . The bulk carriers were unloaded by hand into launches , which brought the material to the valley station. It was not until 1926 that an unloading facility with four cranes with bulk material shovels was set up. It was now possible to unload 6,000 tons of material within 24 hours, which used to take ten days. World icon

In 1937 the second Lorenbahn was built parallel to the first system.

The twenty-five-year license was renewed in 2007 and transferred to Funivie SpA , which can operate the facility until 2032. Funivie SpA is 47% owned by the Campostano family , which has been in the shipping business since the 19th century. Another 47% belong to the Italkok coking plant in San Giuseppe di Cairo, 4% belong to the Savona port authority and 2% to Compagnia Pietro Chiesa, which operates the coal terminal.

Because the old Miramar terminal could no longer be called by modern ships with great drafts, the operation of this terminal and the old valley station were discontinued. The new valley station in San Rocco , located just outside the center of Savona at 140 meters above sea level, has been in operation since 2010 . It is connected by underground conveyor belts to the new bulk goods terminal in the deep water port, which can be used by ships with a draft of up to 18 meters. The conversion of the plant cost 36 million euros. Remains of the old facility can still be seen.
