Cairo Montenotte is an Italian municipality in the province of Savona with 12,841 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019).
history
During the First French Empire, Savona was the capital of the French department of Montenotte . The department was created on June 6, 1805 and so named because Napoleon Bonaparte had won the battle of Montenotte on April 12, 1796 against the Austrians of General Jean-Pierre de Beaulieu . During the Second World War, Slovenian and Croatian civilians were interned in the Cairo Montenotte concentration camp in Italy .
