Steffi Deparade-Becker

Steffi Deparade-Becker (born June 5, 1954 in Halle (Saale) as Steffi Becker ) is a German painter and graphic artist .

Live and act

After graduating from high school, Steffi Deparade-Becker did an internship at the Institute for Architectural Enamel in Thale (Harz) in preparation for studying art in Halle. From 1975 to 1980 she studied painting at the Burg Giebichenstein Art College in Halle with Inge Götze, Günther Rechn , Hannes H. Wagner , Willi Sitte and Henri Deparade , who was assistant to Hannes H. Wagner at the time. In 1977 she married Deparade, who gave her important impulses and suggestions for her artistic development. They have one son.

In 1980 she made the academic degree (diploma). From 1981 she became a member of the VBK of the GDR and worked as a freelance artist in Halle. The artistic path of Steffi Deparade-Becker began in the still academic beginnings as a veristic figure and portrait painter. Later, her painting style developed more into painterly abstract compositions with initially figurative fragments that get lost in the course of development.

Two quotes describe her work:

The art historian Marius Winzeler wrote in a text from 2011:

… “In an exciting contrast of monumental-looking, painterly captured files, bodies, body parts and architectural quotes, surfaces, landscape elements, an extremely powerful imagery developed… the artist finally dispensed with figurative elements entirely. Time-boundness and timelessness, space in itself, color in itself, painting in itself - these have become the new image contents that are presented to us here and now as landscapes. However, they are not concrete and nameable landscapes, they are more topographies of inner visions ... "

"The pictures by Steffi Deparade-Becker are not primarily concerned with statements about color, structure, contrast, that is, with a color event alone. Instead, they take an original, special, subjective dialogue into the picture, which always contains history, and thus time. ” Art historian Ursula Meyer-Rogge from a text (catalog from 2011).

At the end of the 1980s, she and her husband submitted an “application for permanent departure” from the GDR , which led to an exhibition ban and the removal of all works from public buildings, which became obsolete with the fall of the Wall . From 1992 to 1994 she started as an employee of the cultural office of the city of Halle and took care of works of art in public space that were believed to be lost.

In 1995 she moved to Dresden with Deparade, who accepted a call from a university, and has since worked there as a freelance artist. From 1995 to 2010 she also taught at universities in Dresden and Zittau .
