Mortem is a death metal band from Peru .
Band history
Mortem was founded in 1986 by Alvaro Amduscias (vocals, drums) and Fernán Nebiros (guitar, bass) in Lima . Influenced by bands such as Slayer and Venom , as well as various underground bands from the beginning death metal scene, the search for a line-up began. The scene in Peru was very small, most of the bands were only known through tapetrading and so the search was very difficult. As a two-man band, the first demo recording called Historias de la Cripta was recorded in 1987 .
In 1988 a first line-up was found and the band played live for the first time. In the period that followed, four demos were recorded with changing line-ups. In 1995 the debut album Demon Tales appears , which is initially only distributed in Peru. It was not until 1996 that the German independent label Merciless Records released the album for the European market. The Devil Speaks in Tongues , the second work, appeared in 1998. After a stable line-up crystallized in 1999, they released an album called Decomposed Possession for the third and last time via Merciless Records. The band then takes a four year release hiatus, as founding member Fernan Nebiros did his Masters in Linguistics in Arizona . During this time the band only rehearsed sporadically and occasionally played live. In 2003 there was a mini tour through Europe, the band performed a. a. in Germany and Sweden.
In 2004 Mortem signed with Iron Pegasus Records . In the same year they play for the first time in the USA, supporting The Chasm in Chicago. In 2005, Mortem's last studio album to date, De Natura Daemonum, was released . In 2006 an EP called Devoted to Evil will be added . A live album limited to 1000 copies will be released in 2007 on the Peruvian label Heavier Records .
Music genre
Mortem plays fast, technical old school death metal in the style of Morbid Angel and Necrodeath . Their music is enriched by the characteristic South American Thrash elements, as they can also be heard in Sarcófago and the older Sepultura .
