The Naviglio Grande is the oldest Naviglio ( canal ) in Milan .

It was built between 1177 and 1257 and draws its water from Ticino ( Ticino ). Over 50 km long, it served as a transport route between Milan and Lake Maggiore (and thus also Switzerland ). For the construction of the dome required marble blocks , but also bulk goods such as coal were shipped to him, and barges through the channel punted were. In the 1960s, the transport traffic was stopped.

The Naviglio is now used as a water dispenser for agriculture . At the end of the canal (in Milan) a number of pubs and restaurants have established themselves on both banks, which are well attended in the evenings and on weekends.

From Milan a cycle path leads along the canal to Gaggiano on the right, from there to Abbiategrasso on the left side of the canal; it is often used by many joggers.

The towns of Buccinasco , Corsico , Trezzano sul Naviglio , Gaggiano, Vermezzo and Abbiategrasso are on the banks of the river .
