The Teatro Lirico Sperimentale in Spoleto was founded in 1947 by Adriano Belli , lawyer and musicologist, with the aim of preparing young singers who have not yet made their debut for an artistic career.

advancement

The activity carried out on an annual basis is divided into three phases:

  1. The competition for young opera singers of the European Union (in March), considered one of the most important European competitions at international level. A jury selects the candidates.
  2. The debut preparation course for the winners of the singing competition (from April to August). During the course, the singers have lessons in facial expressions, vocal expression, diction and recitation. The lecturers in recent years have included: Renato Bruson , Raina Kabaivanska , Luca Ronconi , Ugo Gregoretti , Henning Brockhaus , Piera Degli Esposti , Enza Ferrari , Massimo De Bernart , Ruggero Raimondi and many others. In the final phase of the course, the singers are prepared for the roles of the operas selected by the artistic direction.
  3. The opera season that takes place in Spoleto at the Teatro Nuovo and the Caio Melisso theater is the culmination of the young singers' preparation. The season includes at least three titles in the operatic repertoire. One of the productions is also performed in the main cities of Umbria: Perugia (Morlacchi Theater), Terni (Verdi Theater), Todi (Municipal Theater), Orvieto (Mancinelli Theater), Città di Castello (Teatro degli Illuminati), Assisi (Lyrick Theater).
