Spiros Argiris

Spiros Argiris (also Spyros Argiris , Greek Σπύρος Αργύρης ; * August 24, 1948 in Athens ; † May 19, 1996 in Nice ) was a Greek conductor .

Live and act

Spiros Argiris studied conducting at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna with Hans Swarowsky and at the Conservatoire Américain in Fontainebleau with Nadia Boulanger and piano with Alfons Kontarsky . From 1986 to 1992 he was music director of the Festival dei Due Mondi in Spoleto and the “Spoleto Festival USA” in Charleston , South Carolina . He was also music director of the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste , from 1989 to 1990 of the Orchester Philharmonique de Nice in Nice and from 1991 to 1994 at the Teatro Massimo Bellini in Catania .

Spiros Argiris conducted in Germany at the Hamburg State Opera , the Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Bavarian State Opera ; in other European countries at the Rome Opera , the Opéra de Monaco and the Opéra Bastille in Paris, and in North America at the opera houses in Baltimore , Miami and Montreal . As a concert conductor he has directed the Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin , the WDR Symphony Orchestra Cologne , the Gewandhausorchester Leipzig, the Orchester symphonique de Montréal and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra . His repertoire ranged from classical operas, among others by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart , Giuseppe Verdi and Richard Strauss , to contemporary compositions by Alfred Schnittke and Hans Werner Henze .

Spiros Argiris died of lung cancer in the hospital in the Cimiez district of Nice. He lived in Monte Carlo , was married to Lena Argiris and had a stepson.

The cities of Sarzana and Pietrasanta organize the “Premio Spiros Argiris”, an international competition for young opera singers.
